The nurse, without hesitation, reached up inside my wife’s cervix to elevate the baby’s head off the cord to restore blood flow. Once backup arrived, she jumped onto the bed with my wife and rode with her into the C-section room, continuing to keep the baby’s head elevated.
My wife and I had a miscarriage with our first pregnancy, which left us heartbroken. By some miracle, we were pregnant again just six days later. Doctors were shocked. We tip-toed through the entire pregnancy, always terrified of the ‘what ifs.” All we hoped and prayed for was for him to be safe and healthy. My wife’s blood pressure elevated in the last trimester forcing us to induce 3 weeks early. The doctor broke her water and a few hours later she went to the bathroom, laid back down and our nurse came in to check the dilation of her cervix when she immediately saw that the umbilical cord had prolapsed and was visible. The nurse stayed calm, called for backup, and explained this would require an emergency C-section. With the cord being pinched, it was cutting off his blood supply and was losing oxygen. I watched and listened to his heart monitor as his rhythm dropped rapidly from 126 bpm to below 40 bpm and was continuing to drop. All I could think was that we were about to lose our baby boy. The nurse, without hesitation, reached up inside my wife’s cervix to elevate the baby’s head off the cord to restore blood flow. Once backup arrived, she jumped onto the bed with my wife and rode with her into the C-section room, continuing to keep the baby’s head elevated. From there, everything became a blur. I felt so helpless, like there was nothing I could do. Somebody came and spoke to me about what was happening and what to expect. There was a good chance he was going to need resuscitation. Eight minutes later, they brought me our baby boy, happy and healthy. Tears of relief poured from my eyes. Our nurse stayed with her under the OR table to keep his head elevated up until the moment the doctor pulled him out. His vitals were restored, and Mom was making a great recovery. I have no doubt in my mind that our nurse saved our son’s life. She truly is a hero and a blessing to our family. We will never forget all of her kind acts and hope she understands how much we appreciate her. Thank you so much!!
