Bri was in charge of the ICU, and as I was rounding the unit, I overheard her ordering a food tray for a visitor.
While this is a single story and experience, I know this encompasses Bri's actions and practice as a nurse every day. Bri was in charge of the ICU, and as I was rounding the unit, I overheard her ordering a food tray for a visitor. She paid for it herself, and when I asked about the visitor, she said this visitor, who lived with cognitive disabilities, was homeless and without access to food and the apartment while his mother was critically ill, and he hadn't eaten in days and wasn't able to get into the apartment. He had been eating graham crackers and apple juice for days as he was trying to understand what was going on with his mother.

She was able to bring him a warm, nutritious lunch without drama or recognition for what she did. She went above and beyond to learn about his situation, the barriers, and challenges he had while his mother was sick, recognizing he had no one else, and was able to get him a meal so he could rest and relax without hunger and stress at least one afternoon during his mother's critical illness and time in the ICU. So many of the people we serve are without access to so many basic needs. That day, I knew she saw the impact of her deep compassion in getting a warm meal for a patient's family member who needed so much and didn't ask for anything. Witnessing this small gesture was impactful to me, and I'm so proud to be her coworker.
