She reminded me to breathe, reassured me when I was afraid, and gave me strength when I felt like I had none left.
Brianna Preston made one of the most frightening and meaningful experiences of my life into one I will never forget. At 22 years old, I was 37 weeks pregnant when I was diagnosed with oligohydramnios and admitted for induction. I was terrified. From a young age, I had been told that due to PCOS and endometriosis, I would likely never conceive naturally, yet I defied the odds. When I became pregnant, it felt like a miracle, but tragically, I lost that pregnancy at almost nine weeks along. Now, exactly one year later to the day, I was preparing to deliver my daughter, overwhelmed with fear that something might go wrong.
From the moment I met Adrianne, my primary nurse, I felt safe. She spoke with kindness and encouragement, patiently answered every question my husband and I had, and treated me with compassion and respect. She made sure I was comfortable through every exam and even went out of her way to bring me extra popsicles to lift my spirits during the long night of labor.
The next morning, after receiving an epidural and laboring through the night, Adrianne came in for one final check before her shift ended. I had quickly progressed to 10 centimeters. Without hesitation, she ran to get my OB, who was preparing for a scheduled C-section, and within moments, Adrianne and Brianna were at my side.
As my husband and mother held my hands, Brianna stayed close, calmly guiding me through the most intense and overwhelming moments. She reminded me to breathe, reassured me when I was afraid, and gave me strength when I felt like I had none left.
Just 20 minutes later, my daughter was born, exactly one year after my loss.
What I will never forget are the small but powerful things Brianna said in those moments. As I held my daughter, Brianna comforted me as she gently cleaned my baby, saying, “Look at what you did. You made this. She’s here, she’s safe.” Her words will forever be engraved in my heart.
Because of Brianna, my experience as a young first-time mom was not defined by fear, but by compassion, encouragement, and joy. Almost two years later, as we near my daughter’s birthday, I still think of her. She is the perfect example of what the DAISY Award represents, an extraordinary nurse who goes above and beyond to provide not just medical care, but emotional support and true human connection.
I will be forever grateful to her.
