She was attentive to my meals, ensuring I could eat and guiding me toward foods my system could handle.
During my stay at Sanford Hospital for leukemia treatment, I was blessed to be cared for by Nurse Brianna Schmitz. Over 80 years old, with poor eyesight and very limited hearing, my hospital days could have been lonely and difficult, but Brianna made them brighter, easier, and deeply meaningful.
Because I could not watch television, my daughter brought me an iPad. Brianna patiently helped me find movies, attached the headphones, and sometimes even sat with me to watch when her time allowed. Those small moments of companionship meant the world to me.
She was attentive to my meals, ensuring I could eat and guiding me toward foods my system could handle. She was especially diligent about protecting my mouth and lips from treatment-related damage, reminding me and helping me care for myself.
Brianna always spoke loudly enough so I could hear, carefully explaining each medication, its purpose, and possible side effects. She walked through the halls with me, encouraging my strength, and at the end of every shift, she stopped by to say goodbye.
What touched me most was how she made me feel - not just like another patient, but like a person who mattered. Her kindness, patience, and respect turned a difficult hospital stay into an experience filled with dignity and compassion.
Brianna Schmitz is more than a nurse. She is a healer of both body and spirit, and I will always remember the extraordinary care she gave me.
