I’m typing this exactly a week post-op, and N still asks for Bri occasionally. She really made a positive impact on my little boy. And myself.
Brianna (Bri), the overnight nurse during our stay after N’s surgery, was absolutely phenomenal. Here are just a few of the things she did for us:
1) N wanted to go for a walk rather than being cooped up in our overnight room, so Bri went the extra mile to find toys such as books, puzzles, and even costumes (superhero) for N and the other kids to play with. She also took time to play with N and make him feel comfortable.
2) N was scared of his IV meds, so Bri let N use a syringe to spray her with water a few times to ease his fear of the IV meds. She even brought in extra towels so he could spray me, too, for fun! He had an absolute blast with this activity.
3) I was able to get a free meal during our stay, and I had ordered things I knew N could eat/would eat in case he was still hungry after his meal, and he ended up eating my food too. When Bri found out about that, she went to Kwik Trip on her break, in the snow storm, mind you, and brought me back breadsticks and a cheeseburger and my favorite soda. (Her generosity made me literally tear up.) We had gotten there at around 8 am, so I hadn’t eaten all day.
4) Bri listened to my concerns and made me feel heard. Actually heard. She let me vent about anything and everything and comforted me the whole time. N is my foster child whom I’ll be adopting eventually, and often enough, people make me feel unheard, like I’m annoying them or an inconvenience, and more. But Bri didn’t. She made me feel like N and I belonged, and took care of N like he was her own child. She made N feel so comfortable that in the middle of the night when he woke up crying, he asked for Bri instead of me! Which is not like N at all. She quickly became someone N felt safe enough to go to when he was hurting. That’s a huge step for N, given all he’s been through in his short 3 years of life.
Bri was such a kind, caring, motivated, exceptional, and amazing person, and I am so incredibly grateful to have had her as one of our nurses. Especially overnight when N was struggling to sleep or feel good, or when he was scared. She’s truly an inspiration, and I just want her to know that she is meant to do the job she does and she’s truly making a difference in people's lives.

Thank you, Bri. For everything.
