Bridley was beside me, her charge nurse, while I was on the house-wide huddle, and overheard the oncology CN stating they had to give a patient on another floor a chemo drug and that they didn't have anyone that they could send to do it. She heard the name of the drug and said, "I can give that med", as she is chemo certified.
She was willing to go help, and we could make it work for a few hours with our unit staffing, so we called the oncology CN and got in touch with the unit that needed the help, which turned out to be the CVICU, and learned the patient was quite sick, requiring 1:1 care. She didn't have to volunteer to go and do that for an adult patient, but she heard that there was a need and didn't want the patient to go without treatment if she could give it to them.
Her first thought was that she could give that and wanted to see if she could help. The ICU was very grateful and collaborative. They are always willing and volunteer to help with patient care. She wears many hats for our unit, including facilitating, serving as a sedation nurse, being chemo-certified (one of only two), and taking care of our sickest patients. We are proud to have her work with us on pediatrics.
