I told Brieanne, "This was death with dignity."
My husband had received treatments for multiple myeloma. My husband fell at home breaking his right femur. He was taken to St. Vincent hospital and had surgery to set the bone. Surgery went well, but he was in constant pain. His speech was impaired, and it was difficult to swallow. The nurses were excellent caring for him - turning him, placing pillows all around and giving pain medication often. But he received no relief from the pain. The nurses showed such love and compassion caring for my husband. Soon thereafter, pneumonia set in. They gave him antibiotics, but there was no improvement in his condition.
My son and I consulted with three doctors. Their prognosis was that his body was shutting down. We told the doctors, "no heroic measures", but keep him comfortable. On Monday night, Brieanne Power was assigned to care for my precious husband. Brieanne gave him three potent pain killer shots and then started an IV drip with strong pain killer. They put pillows around him to keep him comfortable. His body relaxed, as if in a deep sleep. We were beside him all through the night.
Several times Brieanne came in to check on him. His room was across from the nurse's station, so they could monitor his heart all through the night. Brieanne came in and told us that he could go quickly, but he didn't. Approximately two hours into treatment, Brieanne came in and talked to me, his wife. She said, "He's waiting for you to say something to him". Brieanne has had years of experience with people near death. I knew what she meant. My precious husband, being a Christian, I told him what a wonderful husband he was to me and how much I loved him. I said, "I release you to go to be with Jesus." Shortly thereafter, he went to be with his Savior. As long as I live, I will never forget the love and compassion Brieanne showed to my precious husband. I told Brieanne, "This was death with dignity."
