The simulation experience is one of the most powerful ways Brittany improves communication between groups.
Brittany has taken the responsibility of learning as much as possible about health equity and brings that knowledge to all of her activities. The best example of this goal is she participated in developing a curriculum for bedside staff to simulate de-escalation of conversations to improve the care families receive. She is piloting that curriculum and training bedside staff in these techniques. Brittany has led the implicit bias training course for the clinical educator team. She is working to develop inclusive principles to guide the creation of all education going forward. She leads our department with an equity and inclusion moment at all our staff meetings and has organized a "Nursing Salon" for staff to come together and discuss equity and inclusion. She is working on interventions to make staff aware so they can work on reducing barriers for families. She has led a training for preceptors to discuss equity and inclusion principles when training new staff. I think the simulation experience is one of the most powerful ways she improves communication between groups. She guides people through challenging situations and encourages them to be uncomfortable because that is when we learn. She isn't afraid to talk about something difficult. Her education and simulation background combined with her passion for equity and inclusion makes her ideal to advance this work. She introduces topics in a gentle way, encourages small and large group discussion, and leaves people with a tangible "to do." This work is always present and requires continuous effort.
