I met Brittany after an episode of multiple abdominal abscesses and an emergency colostomy. Two months later, I was diagnosed with a peri-stoma Pyoderma Gangranosum wound. This was excruciatingly painful and required local anesthesia gel in order to change the dressing. Despite many rounds of medications, the wound enlarged and surrounded my Ostomy. The wound was very difficult to keep clean, and the Ostomy was challenging to pouch. Brittany was with me for every hospitalization and almost every 3-week clinic appointment over a year’s time. Her constant encouragement helped me get through this ordeal. As this wound became more complex to care for, Brittany found new and innovative wound care plans to try. She researched treatment updates and current clinical trial results, always looking for something that could help me. Her encouragement and positive approach kept my spirits up and helped me get through the weddings of both a daughter and son. After the ostomy was moved to the other side of my abdomen, Brittany oversaw my wound vac management and, finally, the closure of that wound and my colostomy. I was blessed to have Brittany by my side throughout this chapter of my life. BIDMC and the Wound and Ostomy department are fortunate to have such an outstanding nurse working for them.
