Brittany Philbin has been a registered nurse in our Harborview Emergency Department since 2014, though her commitment to healthcare started long before she joined us. Her resume includes volunteer EMT experience with the visitors of Central Park in New York, preparation of postmortem exam reports as a medical records specialist to the Chief Medical Examiner in Burlington, Vermont, and a staff nurse at both the University of Tennessee and Tacoma General Emergency Departments.
Brittany provides excellent nursing care to our critically ill patients. She can identify subtle changes in patient condition and her documentation is meticulous. Brittany functions as an ED staff RN, Triage RN, Charge RN, and Preceptor. Her knowledge is sought out by colleagues as she is well known for staying up-to-date with the latest information in nursing. Brittany has obtained her Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Certified Emergency Nurse certification, and is one of only 3,200 Trauma Certified Registered Nurses worldwide. Brittany attends a variety of classes and conferences each year and is a member of the Emergency Nurses Association.
Brittany is currently one of our most involved nurses. She has served as Chair to both the ED Unit Practice Council and the HMC Nurse Practice Council. In these roles, she coordinated process improvement projects such as an education binder for high-risk, low-frequency skills, ED debrief forms, and patient and staff safety in the ED. Brittany organized the very popular ED apparel order with a clothing logo that she designed for our department.
In 2019, Brittany taught the arterial line management station at the ED Skills Fair to her peers. Last but not least, we cannot nominate Brittany without mentioning her passion for orcas and recycling. Brittany is an ED recycling champion and encourages us all to participate in conservation. The ED is recognized as a leader in the recycling of blood pressure cuffs, oxygen saturation probes, and pressure bags. This clearly helps our unit and HMC to be fiscally responsible while also promoting greener earth and cleaner seas. Her passion has inspired the ED Resiliency Committee to name their mentor pods as 'H-Pods' in tribute to the Pacific Northwest Orcas.
Brittany is well-liked by her peers. She has a great sense of humor and wears her heart on her sleeve. We want to recognize Brittany for her continued commitment to our department and colleagues and we look forward to many more of her exciting contributions.
