Brittany finds pure joy in caring for our homeless veterans who live within the Domiciliary. She is truly an advocate and kind soul.
Brittany Tieken BSN, RN, CEN, started her career in the Emergency Department as student nurse and transitioned into staff nurse. Growing her knowledge of critical care nursing and displaying natural leadership skills, she blossomed into a preceptor for new nurse graduates and new nurse hires. Her approachable demeanor, calm presence, clinical judgment, and stellar professionalism promoted her to the role of charge nurse; leading with confidence, trust, respect and compassion. Driven to improve herself, peers, the department, the facility, and veteran outcomes, she joined the Code Blue Committee. This role required her to assist, instruct, and motivate learners throughout VAMC Indy on best practices during those critical events. While working to improve the code cart supplies, she also implemented and completed a trial of EZ-IO placement. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Brittany was chosen to give her expert opinions on the layout and function of the Respiratory ER. This extraordinary nurse demonstrated her prowess even further when she earned her professional certification as a Certified Emergency Nurse, CEN. While helping to facilitate transition back into the community, Brittany finds pure joy in caring for our homeless veterans who live within the Domiciliary. She is truly an advocate and kind soul. It is no surprise that she was asked to become one of the charge nurses within weeks of joining the team. Her leadership and knowledge were demonstrated during a cardiac arrest at the Domiciliary. Brittany ran to the aid of a brave veteran who had started CPR on an unconscious veteran. After a brief scene assessment, she provided constructive intervention to assist the veteran with proper compressions while awaiting the AED. Brittany, along with two other veterans, worked for nearly 20 minutes and delivered several shocks that ultimately saved the life of the veteran. Upon EMS arrival, Brittany shared her knowledge of the veteran and the timeline of events. The veteran was transported to the closest hospital and admitted to the ICU. This humble and noble nurse absolutely deserves recognition and The DAISY Award.
