Our youngest son F, who is 4, had fallen and hurt his head. He presented with signs of a concussion, we ended up bringing him into the ER for a quick check. They sent us home for observation and if anything changed to let them know. The next morning, he was still having nausea and vomiting, he just wasn't himself. Back to the ER we went, we were greeted by some of the warmest smiles I'd ever seen, everyone was calm and ready to take on the day. We got checked in and checked on by Dr. S, a quick visit and a quick trip to get an X-ray done then back to our room to wait. Within a few minutes, F was up talking and asking for a chocolate shake. I was gathering our things ready to be discharged when Dr. S came into our room and told me to sit down - F had a broken skull and would need to be transferred by ambulance to the children's hospital in the cities.
As I was on the phone with my husband, a young nurse came in got his IV in, brought him a few goodies, and prepped him for the ambulance ride. I put my phone in my purse, looked at F who was now almost asleep and I could feel my heart hit the floor, I felt like I couldn't catch my breath and like I might be physically sick. The paramedics came into the room and began talking to me but I couldn't hear a word they were saying. As tears rolled down my cheeks I felt someone grab both of my hands and say "Mom, they're ready to take off now. Remember to breathe, F needs you. You've got this, you've got this." I felt the last tear roll down my cheek and she squeezed my hand and off we went. I don't remember much after that moment but I remember thinking how amazing this nurse was, she had just single-handedly taken care of my son, all the orders given while keeping him calm but also knew that in that moment that I needed her too.
There are times where I have seen Brittany out in the community and am filled with so much gratitude that often my eyes fill up with tears, my heart beats a little calmer and I breathe a little easier. A day that was so scary and still brings tears to my eyes, she was able to help find the calm in the storm. When I think of what the definition of a person who went above and beyond her job is, I will forever think of Brittany. From the bottom of my heart, Thank you Brittany for every single moment of that day. Our family will be forever grateful.
