My mother received care at Wexner Ohio State East Hospital. She was Med Flighted from a facility in Dayton, Ohio with an Acute Exacerbation of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis. My 68-year-old mother went from working, traveling, not requiring any supplemental oxygen to becoming dependent on 30-45 liters of oxygen in a matter of days. My 26 years of Nursing told me she had a very poor prognosis but my heart was hoping for a miracle to stabilize this progressive disease.
Brittney Nessle was my mother's nurse for 4 consecutive days. She is a traveling nurse through American Mobile Nurses and has been on assignment at Ohio State East Hospital in the Pulmonary Intensive Care Unit for the last three months, I believe.
I was so overwhelmed with relief and gratitude that my mother had such an outstanding, compassionate, competent, patient nurse. Immediately, Brittney made my mother feel at ease and communicated clearly what she was going to do for her each time she entered the room. She made my mother feel confident, encouraged, and safe.
Brittney was extremely flexible and patient with our large family, but also respectfully kicked us out when she knew my mother needed rest or when she had to recover from frequent drops in her Oxygen saturation. Brittney would sit on my mother's bed, hold my mother's hands and breathe with her, reassuring her through these frequent terrifying spells. My mother's well-being was Brittney's priority and my mother kept telling me she was so thankful to have such a wonderful nurse. "I really hit the jackpot with Brittney", she said.
Brittney took care of all of us, especially when we needed to make my mother Comfort Care and had to have those excruciating discussions about End of Life. Brittney matched my mother's grace, humility, gentleness, and compassion for others. Knowing how taxing, demanding, unpredictable critical care nursing can be, I was in awe of Brittney's integrity and character that never waned even in the most stressful of times. Her collaboration and leadership with the physicians and respiratory therapists gave us all the utmost confidence that my mother was getting the best care possible.
On behalf of the entire G Family (and there were at least 15 of us), we would like to recognize Brittney for her exceptional care, her authentic spirit, and her nursing excellence.
We will never forget how she touched my mother's much-too-short life, and the commitment she gave all of us. Even though My mother passed away, we still believe we had a miracle, in Brittney Nessle RN.
