However, what truly sets Brittney apart is her ability to embrace the art of nursing—the part that is more difficult to teach in a classroom.
I had the opportunity to work with Brittney in the classroom and clinical setting this spring in NSG225, and she has consistently demonstrated the qualities of an outstanding nursing student. Brittney’s impact was reflected in a heartfelt message from a patient she cared for during her OB clinical rotation at Westmoreland Hospital:
" I was recently a patient in Westmoreland Hospital due to having my baby. I had many nurses during my hospital stay, but the one who stood out the most was Brittney. I am not sure of her last name, but I know she is a student at Westmoreland Community College.
Her teacher’s name was Tara Smith, I believe. Both of them were so nice. Brittney was extremely helpful in such a vulnerable time. Anytime my husband, baby, or I needed something, she got it for us. She was always asking what we needed or what she could do for us. She showed great professionalism. She is going to make a wonderful nurse.
I hope she gets recognized for her professionalism. Please thank her for my family."
Brittney’s excellence extends beyond clinical skills. She consistently impressed me with her thorough assessments, medication knowledge, and critical thinking regarding physiology and potential complications. However, what truly sets Brittney apart is her ability to embrace the art of nursing—the part that is more difficult to teach in a classroom.
That day in the hospital, Brittney saw more than just a patient. She saw a new mother in need of comfort, reassurance, and compassionate care. Without prompting, she took the time to check in on her frequently, listen to her birth story, and even assist her with her first shower—acts of kindness that, while not required, made all the difference to this family at a vulnerable moment in time.
I am incredibly proud of Brittney and humbled to have been a part in her journey to becoming a nurse. She will undoubtedly leave an indelible mark on the profession, and I can’t wait to see the incredible things she does with her career!
