That kind of compassion and understanding of our past experience on a delivery floor cannot be taught. She simply was the right person for us in that moment.
I want to nominate our labor and delivery nurse Brittney for the extraordinary care she provided to my wife and me during the birth of our son. Nearly a year prior, we lost our sweet daughter and experienced a stillborn delivery. Thus, we were filled with much anxiety and cautious excitement for the arrival of her brother. Brittney took care of us that night and she was adamant about “having a birthday party on her shift.” We immediately felt at ease with her calm, yet confident demeanor. She knew when we simply needed a small distraction, and when we needed to discuss all the upcoming details of the delivery.
That kind of compassion and understanding of our past experience on a delivery floor cannot be taught. She simply was the right person for us in that moment. Brittney was more than a cheerful distraction. As a mother herself, she was an excellent coach to my wife through the pains of labor. Encouraging her through every contraction, and coaching us through the always stressful epidural.
We greatly appreciated her interactions with her colleagues. She was so confident in working with the doctors. We knew she had our back. And we could tell the doctors trusted her as well. She made sure to clearly communicate my wife’s allergies to a particular prep solution (multiple horrible past experiences) and we knew we’d be all right.
There was a moment during the pushing when the OB had to leave to deliver another baby. It was just the 2 of us and Brittney there waiting minutes before the final pushes. She kept us calm, she assured us of our Little Man’s health, and we knew he’d be there shortly and healthy. And he was. Brittney got the birthday party she wanted, and the one we needed.
I wish I had more time to compliment the entire team. We were so impressed with the attention to detail across the board and the individualized care we received. Brittney is so very deserving of the DAISY Award and I was grateful to have an outlet to thank her once more for being the person we needed at one of the most anxious few hours of our lives. Thank you, Brittney!
