My 13-year-old daughter had to have a lumbar puncture and she was so nervous about the whole thing. Brittney was wonderful; she introduced herself, cleaned her hands, explained the steps of what would happen, how things would feel, answered our questions, made sure my daughter was comfortable and kept her safe the whole time. Even though I work as a nurse, she explained what to expect and educated us thoroughly enough that my entire family understood.
I feel that Brittney took some of the burdens of being a nurse away and just allowed me to be a mom. I especially appreciate that she reassured us explaining she had prior experience with this procedure for children in her past employment. It really helped us to feel more at ease. Brittney even tried to draw blood off of the existing IV to save a poke although she knew she would have to redress the site. She followed strict infection control measures and assisted with the lumbar puncture.
During the procedure, Brittney talked with my daughter to try to get her mind off the large needle in her back. I truly appreciated having her as my daughter's nurse. God put her there for us and I am truly grateful. My daughter said, "She was a great nurse" which is saying a lot coming from a teenager!
