It is often the small things that truly touch the lives of family members while their loved one is being cared for in the hospital. Brooke Taylor turned an ordinary task into an act of compassion that profoundly touched the heart of her patient's daughter.
The patient's daughter wrote, "Brooke came on shift while we were wearing yellow gowns and face masks. I remember the smile in her eyes. She pleasantly provided us information about Mom, her vitals, and the medications that she was on. She always asked if we had any more questions or if she could get us anything." Ms. S greatly appreciated the extra concern Brooke would show by continuing to stop by and check on her mother, even when she was not her nurse.
There was one particular day when the ICU was extremely busy and her mother's nurse was tending to another patient. Brooke came in to help reposition her, knowing that she also would have to help clean her up after a bowel movement. She did exactly that, all with a pleasant smile and calm demeanor.
Furthermore, Ms. S's mother had vomit in her hair from the night before. While other staff members said it would be easier to wait until her breathing tube was removed, Brooke could see how much it meant to Ms. S to get her mother's hair clean. She promptly gathered the supplies, washed the patient's hair, and cleaned her all up.
Ms. S said her mother smelled so much better after that and was certain that she would now rest easier. Ms. S wrote this nomination on the twelfth day of hospitalization and her mother was still intubated at that time. She was beyond thankful that Brooke seized the opportunity to clean up her mother when she did.
Brooke's pleasant, calm demeanor and her willingness to serve above what is required of her brings great credit to herself, the Medical ICU, and Baylor Scott & White Health. Thank you, Brooke, for serving faithfully!
