Brooke accurately assessed the baby and noticed that his clinical change warranted a prompt intervention by the care team.
Baby M was admitted to the NICU on his date of birth as a 28-week premature infant. He was diagnosed with sepsis later that evening. By the following morning he began to quickly decompensate due to septic shock. His nurse that morning, Brooke quickly picked up on his changing clinical status and alerted the care providers who were currently participating in morning “sign-out” rounds. Brooke accurately assessed the baby and noticed that his clinical change warranted a prompt intervention by the care team. She requested for the providers to come to the bedside, which we did, leaving sign-out rounds underway. Shortly afterward, baby M was given additional IV fluids, medications, blood products, and was escalated on his ventilator support. He began to show improvements over the course of the shift.

I have no doubt in my mind that Brooke’s excellent clinical skills along with her quick thinking in getting the medical providers to her patient’s bedside saved baby M’s life that day. She has gone on to become one of his excellent primary nurses, and baby M has continued to show growth and progress each day. It is for this reason that I am nominating Brooke Legg for the DAISY Award.
