On behalf of the entire Women's and Infants' Department at UCHealth Highlands Ranch Hospital, I would like to nominate Brooke Scott, RN for the inaugural DAISY Award. For nearly a year, Brooke has worked tirelessly to collect items and resources for the perinatal loss program to ensure each family has memories of their baby and support to help grieve the loss that no family should have to endure. This effort included countless phone calls to community organizations to explain who she was, what she was doing, and how their support could help the cause. The passion Brooke showed allowed her to obtain over $6,000 in donations to the Highlands Ranch Hospital Perinatal Loss Program.
Creating this program also involved working with other stakeholders and team members to create forms, packets, educational sessions, and resources for when a perinatal loss does occur at HRH, chairs a formal Perinatal Loss committee that engages other team members in the community activities and education resources that she has started.
Recently, Highlands Ranch Hospital experienced the first obstetric case involving a term intrauterine Fetal Demise. Brooke showed extraordinary caring and compassion to the family. Knowing that Brooke was the best resource, staff reached out to her in this situation. She voluntarily presented to the patient bedside during unscheduled hours and spent unrestricted time with the family, including over a holiday weekend. She showed extraordinary compassion for the situation by lovingly bathing the sweet baby girl, assisted with beautiful photographs, and created molds of her hands and feet. Brooke then spent time in her off-hours creating a meaningful bereavement package, inclusive of a photo journal, Christmas ornaments, and beautiful remembrance plaques that will undoubtedly be cherished for years to come. She led the efforts to send a follow-up card to the family signed by our very own Highlands Ranch Labor and Delivery Team as well as personally follow up with the patient via phone to provide additional support well after discharge. She has represented our hospital and the profession of nursing in an extraordinary way. We are so proud to work with Brooke and to be able to offer this service to any family in need of its resources.
