Brooke Veloff, BSN, RN
My son was admitted to East Madison following surgery and was originally expected to stay one night. That single night turned into several, and at times the experience was frustrating and emotionally taxing. As a 16-year-old, my son often felt out of place on a unit where he was treated more like an adult-or, at times, an inconvenience-rather than a teenager navigating pain, fear, and recovery.
Brooke changed that experience entirely. From the moment she took over his care, Brooke demonstrated exceptional attentiveness and compassion. She never missed a single dose of pain medication, ensured his Polar Ice was always filled with genuine dedication, and-most importantly-she consistently took the time to talk with him. These actions may appear small, but to a teenager recovering from major surgery with a metal rod, stitches, and significant pain, they were everything. Brooke understood that his comfort mattered, and she treated it as a priority.
Brooke never compared him to other patients. She treated him with respect, kindness, and authentic compassion, seeing him as an individual rather than a task.
One morning, while Brooke was writing my son's schedule on the board, I questioned her about a sudden change: he had been reduced from three therapies to one without any explanation or prior conversation. Brooke responded with empathy and understanding-not defensiveness. She reassured me that she would look into the issue, and she followed through.
Brooke promptly returned with clear answers, explained what had happened, and communicated the next steps and internal coordination that had been missing. In a moment when we felt overlooked and left in the dark, she made both him and me feel heard, respected, and supported.
Brooke was a bright spot during a very difficult and uncertain time. Her professionalism, advocacy, compassion, and commitment to patient-centered care had a profound impact on our experience. We are deeply grateful for the care she provided and the humanity she brought into every interaction.
She exemplifies the very best of nursing and is truly deserving of this recognition.
