We have a patient in the ICU who was in a car wreck. This accident caused her uterus to rupture, and her baby boy, whom she was 32 weeks pregnant with, died before she could be brought to the hospital. The staff has all been trying to support the patient and her husband, who was driving when the accident occurred.

The ICU is not familiar with the documentation required for a stillborn baby. I called L&D to see if they could show me what documents needed to be completed. Brookelyn Jones, RN, offered to come to the ICU and assist us with the forms. She went above and beyond.

She completed the unfamiliar documents. She got them a memory box and created a new name tag with the baby's name, height, and weight on it. She talked to the parents and also informed them of the SHARE program that will make hand/foot impressions for them to keep. She also included a stuffed animal for the 5-year-old big brother. She was able to offer a tender presence and navigate a very scary, overwhelming situation.

Brookelyn's actions were very supportive to the grieving parents, but they were also a great support to the bedside nurse and charge nurse, who were feeling very sad about the circumstances. She spent almost two hours helping.

There really are no words to explain how much peace she brought to other staff members and me by what she did and how she did it. She was an angel.

Thank you, Brookelyn, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
