Bryan Ender, RN

My husband was patient. During the first two days of his stay, he had a nurse in the ICU, Bryan, whom we would like to nominate for the DAISY Award. My husband has a very extensive medical history and has chronic pain from 9 back surgeries and 19 levels of spinal fusion. He is often treated like a drug seeker or addict when he is in hospital settings due to his current prescriptions and his history of alcoholism. He has had some absolutely terrible experiences, including at SJRMC, that have made him very reluctant to seek hospital care.

We wish to nominate Bryan for the DAISY Award because when he noticed my husband was starting to have withdrawal symptoms from both medication and alcohol, he stepped in to help my husband through it and make him comfortable. He didn't blame him for his current situation; he didn't make him feel like he wasn't deserving of treatment, and he didn't downplay his symptoms as "this is what you get." Even though my husband couldn't witness his care, I could, and I appreciated Bryan caring for him with dignity and respect. My description of how Bryan cared for my husband is how a patient should be cared for, but based on our experience, that's not the care he typically receives in hospital settings. We nominate Bryan because we want him to know we appreciate his care and compassion, and that it didn't go unnoticed.
