Bryan Jones is a nursing student who has expressed an interest in emergency medicine due to extensive work history as an EMT. Bryan exemplifies what it means to be a well-rounded, kind, and compassionate nurse during our 301 clinical when he cared for an adolescent patient admitted for suicidal and homicidal ideation. Bryan immediately found a way to connect with this patient who suffered from depression and could be isolative on the unit. They discussed their shared interest in guitar, music, and various artists. Through this mutual interest, Bryan was able to form a therapeutic relationship with the patient who had previously engaged in self-destructive behavior on the unit. Bryan’s calming presence and compassionate nature made a difference in a patient who lacked a support system at home and who was going through a difficult time at home. Bryan’s strong psychosocial assessment skills, clinical engagement with this patient, and ability to demonstrate kindness and compassion in a multitude of clinical environments make Bryan a perfect candidate for the DAISY Award.
