Bryce took care of this patient as he would have if it would have been his grandmother or family member. The patient improved dramatically as a result of the kind and caring approach to her care.
Bryce is one of those students that you know will make a great nurse not because of grades but because of who he is and how he presents himself. Bryce is a student that will go above and beyond consistently without being asked or expecting any recognition. He does not need direction to jump in and help his fellow students when they are in need of help, he just does it.
One particular instance during his clinical time in the Fall of 2020, Bryce and another classmate were caring for a patient who had dementia. The patient had been a challenging one for staff to care for during the time as a patient. Bryce and his classmate approached care for this patient in such a compassionate caring manner. He took care of this patient as he would have if it would have been his grandmother or family member. The patient improved dramatically as a result of the kind and caring approach to her care.
Another instance that truly demonstrated his commitment to providing compassionate care happened during his preceptorship. The day after his precepted shift, he reached out needing to seek guidance in how to document his assessment. What resulted was him sharing how he was frustrated that someone could let “him (the patient) get that bad”. He shared that this experience really made him connect with why he wanted to be a nurse and do all that he could for his patients including making sure that their wishes were honored via advance directives. This patient had an impact on him that will last beyond the preceptorship.
As a student, he has shown resilience and determination that has been recognized by several faculty. He has remained committed to not only completing this program but continuing to improve. In the words of one faculty member, “To see how he has grown during his time in this program has been a beautiful thing to witness”. In the midst of adversity when some would not continue, he has persevered and thrived. He will make a fantastic, compassionate, and caring nurse who will positively impact the lives of many.
