We came to appreciate her quick response and commitment to our family member, who wasn't able to advocate for himself, during the four or five days she was in charge of his care. It was difficult to leave the patient, but it was easier knowing she was there.
Our 83-year-old family member already faced multiple medical issues when he was forced to be hospitalized with blood collecting in his eye, which caused a great deal of pain and threatened the eye. New medical issues arose and his communication skills diminished markedly, creating an additional challenge to the nursing staff, so we were extremely impressed with the patience and fortitude of Bushra Bihi, RN. She expertly managed dispensing pain and other medications for a patient who grew impatient with the various forms of treatment and sometimes resisted the constant use of eye drops to treat the eye ailment. With her even temperament and approach, she helped keep him on course with his treatments. Before leaving the hospital, he decided on hospice care at home, but with the care he received from Nurse Bihi and the UM medical staff during his eight-day stay, having him complete treatment for the eye and a virulent UTI set him up for a better start to his final days at home. Nurse Bihi provided another service to those of us who spent those days at the hospital. There were times we missed the visit of the hospital doctor, and Nurse Bihi took the initiative to contact the doctor to come by the room after our arrival, so that we could get the doctor's latest medical update. We came to appreciate her quick response and commitment to our family member, who wasn't able to advocate for himself, during the four or five days she was in charge of his care. It was difficult to leave the patient, but it was easier knowing she was there. He had been hospitalized more than once in 2023, and Nurse Bihi was the gold standard at a time our family member faced his most difficult challenges. As family members who were in from out of town, we were very impressed with the University of Minnesota Medical Center overall.
