I was an in-patient at UM Shore Regional Health in Easton.  I am writing to nominate my nurse, Caitlin Coutu, for a DAISY Award. Caitlin made a special connection with me and my family during my hospitalization. In doing so, she demonstrated all the qualities of an exceptional nurse. I am profoundly grateful for the care and compassion I received as her patient. It is difficult to describe the feeling of being a healthy person one moment and then in pain and frightened the next. Although I had recently undergone successful gallbladder surgery a few weeks before, the sharp, horrendous pain and subsequent hospital re-admission were unexpected. I was confused, concerned, and alarmed about what was to come. Caitlin was by my side, understanding and calming my fears and checking back in with me often to be sure my pain issues were being addressed. After a decision was made to move me to another floor over the weekend, Caitlin helped decide on the private room I requested and was reassigned to continue as my nurse throughout the weekend. One of the challenges of being an in-patient is the constant flow of various caregivers, often what seems to be an army of kind strangers, in and out of your room. You have no idea how comforting it was to have her continued presence in my care. Caitlin served as my advocate and translator. After meeting with my doctors, she reviewed their discussion to ensure I understood their plans and was on board with the decisions. She made me feel that I was actively participating in my own care and recovery. Caitlin embodies the best of nursing. She is empathetic, compassionate, takes the time to know and understand her patients, and is an excellent communicator and translator. She is a patient advocate committed to providing the best care. She is a wonderful representative of your organization.
