While I hope that no other parents have to walk in our shoes, I can only hope that if they do, they get the love and care of Nurse Calla as we did.
My husband and I found out at our 20-week ultrasound at IU North that our baby boy C no longer had a heartbeat. We made the difficult decision to have a D&C and our doctor referred us to IU Methodist to Dr. B. The day of my scheduled procedure, we arrived at L&D. It took us about 20 minutes to get checked in and while there we saw a couple of other pregnant moms getting admitted and were able to overhear their baby's heartbeats being monitored which was very difficult to newly bereaved parents. Our hearts were already in our stomachs and we both did not feel good going into the day.
Next, we were greeted by our nurse Calla. She introduced herself and took us back to our room. Her voice was kind and calm, but also sympathetic to our delicate situation. She prepped me on what to expect while also making sure my husband was comfortable during his wait. She asked our son's name. Before the anesthesia kicked in, I asked her to tell my son that I loved him since I would not be able to see him and tell him myself and she said, "I will, I promise." She and another nurse were there to hold my hands. They were also able to get his footprints for me, which I will always cherish.
After the procedure, Calla asked if we would like to see the Chaplain and we said sure. During the Chaplain's visit, Calla asked to stay in the room and pray with us. My husband and I both thought this was very special and definitely the character of a truly loving, empathetic, and caring nurse. We were able to hug her on our way out and we felt like newfound friends.
Roughly two weeks later we received a handwritten note letting us know she was still thinking and praying for us. Your sweet demeanor and understanding of our situation did not go unnoticed. While I hope that no other parents have to walk in our shoes, I can only hope that if they do, they get the love and care of Nurse Calla as we did. We were honored to have you there that day and in our corner. Thank you.
