Callie Felty, RN
A patient arrived in the department from a local long-term care facility. Unfortunately, the patient was suffering from a catastrophic, life-impacting stroke that left him unable to interact with people or his environment. Due to the extent of his stroke, there were no treatment options available.
The patient, however, was the primary care provider for his cognitively impaired wife, who was with him. Callie was the primary nurse caring for not only the patient but also his wife. The wife’s cognitive state left her unable to understand what was occurring, but she still knew and loved her husband and was concerned about him.
Callie advocated with genuine love and compassion while providing care to both patients. She was resourceful in contacting out-of-state family members, who were unaware of the current situation. The facility had not connected with them, and the wife was not able to provide information other than a nickname of their son. We did not have any additional contact information for their son, but Callie was creative and was able to track down the family, who were very gracious for her efforts.
As the patient was being transferred, she encouraged the wife to give him a hug and kiss, knowing how important this was for both, regardless of their current capacity, both of which at the present were impaired. She provided them with dignity and respect, so they could share love in what quite possibly could be the last moment they shared together.
She continued to provide care for the wife while we arranged for her care to be shifted back to her facility, ensuring she was safe and had all of her needs met.
The entire team providing care for this couple was outstanding, but her kind heart and love of not only her profession, but her patients, shone through. I am very proud of the nurse she has become and wholeheartedly believe she deserves this award.
