Candace and the medical team created a safe way for the wife to visit her husband and be allowed to sit at his bedside while he took his final breaths. As Candace explained the details of the plan, there were tears in her eyes.
Candace is a leader in the ICU unit. She is a relief charge nurse, sits on the code 99 committee and is an ACLS instructor. I have had the amazing opportunity to work with her for the last 9 years. I have watched her grow as a bedside RN, as a leader and in her personal life. She is an exceptional nurse and I love working with her. She strives for excellence in all that she does no matter the situation she is faced with. One of her moments of excellence occurred during the COVID Pandemic. Candace was caring for a very sick elderly gentlemen who was on full life support and not doing well. Family was not allowed to visit due to the COVID visitation restrictions. She advocated for the patient on behalf of the family. She assisted with communication between the family and the patient. In order for this to occur Candace used her personal cell phone to FaceTime with the patient's wife. They had been married for around 50 years and she was not allowed to sit at his bedside. Using FaceTime allowed the wife to see her husband and to be updated on the plan of care.
There came a time when the patient was not getting better and removal of life support was needed. Candace and the medical team created a safe way for the wife to visit her husband and be allowed to sit at his bedside while he took his final breaths. Before the patient's wife was able to come to the hospital Candace FaceTimed the wife again to discuss the plan of care, what to expect, and how this visit would be conducted in a safe manner. I was watching this conversation occur from the nurse's station and was overwhelmed by the compassion, empathy, passion, dedication, and love that came from Candace. As Candace explained the details of the plan, there were tears in her eyes. When the wife came to the ICU, Candace stayed close to offer support for the wife as the patient took his final breath. I always knew Candace was an exceptional and amazing RN but it was this event that demonstrated it to me in a real and authentic way.
I am truly honored to know and work with Candace. She does so many things like this example unnoticed and without expectation of notice. She is a true DAISY Nurse.
