Cara cared for Mrs. O in labor last week at Touro. Mrs. O was having her second baby and her labor was being induced. I had actually cared for her with her first baby along with a nursing student - she and her husband were so happy to see me and thrilled that they would again have an LSU nursing student! Throughout the day, Mr. and Mrs. O complimented Cara and told me how kind and caring she was. She advocated for her by taking the time to constantly make sure the patient's pads were changed as she had ruptured membranes, as well as repositioning her for comfort. She helped Mrs. O breathe with her contractions until she received her epidural and then assisted her in staying still during the epidural administration. Cara helped her push and facilitated the parents having a beautiful "Golden Hour" of skin to skin with their newborn son. Cara also cared for the baby, providing transitional care and a bath and shampoo! Cara really made a connection with this family and made a difference in their birth experience. We left very late that night and Mr. and Mrs. O were with their baby waiting to be transferred to their room. They thanked me for being with them again and for having Cara with them - she said she was such a special part of their experience and would think about her every year on her son's birthday. I am so proud of Cara!!
