I arrived at L&D just after 2 am with heavy vaginal bleeding and was immediately greeted by Carey. I don’t think she was actually my assigned RN, but she immediately jumped into action. She quickly assessed my bleeding and efficiently set the whole team in motion to get started prepping for a stat c-section. Because of her actions, I was able to have spinal anesthesia to be awake for my first baby’s birth just 32 minutes after we arrived at L&D.

Without Carey’s competence and professionalism, things could have gone very differently for my son and/or me. Equally as important, Carey cared for me and my husband like we were the only patients in the hospital. She held my hand during the surgery, made sure someone fed my husband so he didn’t pass out (again…), and facilitated control of my symptoms when I felt terrible after the surgery. She did an amazing job balancing speaking to me like a doctor and a patient while keeping my non-medical husband informed. I work on L&D and have always been amazed by the caring and compassion of the team there, but I have a whole new appreciation for the amazing team now, having been on the patient side of things. It’s always challenging to care for your teammates, but Carey handled it like a true professional. My husband, I, and our son will never forget her heartfelt and competent care.
