October 2020 Honoree
carey duffy, RN, BSN
I visited my physician and it was determined that I needed surgery. Carey helped me complete paperwork to prepare for surgery. I came to a form that I was supposed to sign giving permission for a blood transfusion if needed. I came to a stop and told her I was uncomfortable signing that spot. She listened as I explained that I'd had two anaphylactic shock reactions to blood transfusions following two of my childbirths. I left and she said that she would check into it. Before I knew it, I received a call from her that she had contacted the blood bank and they were checking into my records as far back as 1990-1991. Long story short, it was determined that I should donate two units of my own blood prior to surgery in case I should need some. This brought me great comfort--thank you to her! It was above and beyond!!
Thank you, Carey, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
