Incredibly, Carey took the time and initiative to make some phone calls in order to have an Owensboro Health gastroenterologist (in a completely separate practice) add the patient to his endoscopy schedule.
Carey routinely goes the extra mile for patients, and I have known for some time that she deserved to be recognized for her tireless efforts. Multiple patients have gone out of their way to tell me how refreshing it was to have a busy clinic nurse deal with their medical issues so thoroughly and so kindly. Due to my own busyness, I had not taken the time to nominate Carey earlier. However, her latest effort for a patient was one too many for me to delay any longer.
A 60-year-old female patient had just been hospitalized repeatedly for cardiac and renal issues, and now she finally underwent cardiac clearance to undergo a necessary colonoscopy. She was barely able to complete the full bowel prep required because of how sick she had been. When she arrived at the surgery center the morning of her procedure, however, she finds out that the gastroenterologist himself had unexpectedly become ill and was unable to perform the colonoscopy. Furthermore, this physician (in an independent practice) had no available backup to cover his canceled procedures that day. In desperation, the patient called our primary care office for help - explaining that she was not sure she could go through another prep given how sick she has been this time. Incredibly, Carey took the time and initiative to make some phone calls in order to have an Owensboro Health gastroenterologist (in a completely separate practice) add the patient to his endoscopy schedule - and the procedure was performed the same day!
As the patient's primary care provider, I only found out about Carey's efforts after the fact (at the end of my own busy day). Needless to say, I was more than impressed. Here is the message the patient sent to our office afterward: "Carey, I'm back from having the upper and lower GI [endoscopies]. The doctor was great; I really liked him a lot. I just wanted to thank you again for pulling off a miracle and not only getting another GI doctor to do the procedure today but getting me worked into the outpatient schedule at the hospital. You all are the best! Thank you again."
