Carissa had a young patient who was admitted with some nausea and vomiting. The patient admitted to smoking something that a friend gave her as well. With that being said, the patient was lethargic, her mood was labile at times, and the patient would stare off and not say anything. Carissa spent an extensive amount of time with this patient and thought something just wasn’t right. Carissa spoke with the provider to get orders and stated the way the patient would stop and stare, it almost seemed like possible seizure activity. Others on the case thought it seemed more related to what the patient admitted to smoking and not seizures. The MD did agree to a short-term EEG to rule this out. Long story short, the patient was having epileptic seizures. If it wasn’t for Carissa’s persistence and quality-driven care, the doctor would have never ordered the EEG. Carissa is a thorough nurse who is knowledgeable, and intelligent and communicates well with her interdisciplinary team. The sister of the patient was relieved that something was finally figured out and that someone finally listened to her because she knew her sister wasn’t right. I say that because I helped transfer the patient to the neuro unit and the sister was so thankful! Because of Carissa, this patient was going to have a positive outcome during an unfortunate circumstance. If I was ever hospitalized, I would let Carissa be my RN. No doubt about it.
