She is a strong advocate for the Veterans whom she cares for and the staff that she works with.
When I asked Carlee “what do you like about our clients?” She was quick with her response and it is as follows: Everything!!! I love feeling like I have made a difference to them or helped them in any way, shape or form. I feel like when they come to us they are at a low point/ or at their sickest… and I love being able to support them and help them get through their toughest moments. I especially enjoy the little things that aren’t even nursing related. Like today, I was able to get a pack of gum for a guy and the smile he gave me was just so heartwarming. It’s the feeling of compassion/gratitude that caring for others gives me… that is why I enjoy nursing the most. I feel like I am giving back to them after what they have sacrificed and gone through for our country. My grandpa was in the Army and was cared for here which is also why I love the Veteran population."
Carlee’s passion for nursing and caring for Veterans is clearly evident in her answer and the care that she provides our Veterans every day she is here. Carlee never hesitates to provide the best care. I share with you a day that was quite difficult for the nursing staff. Upon coming to the unit and receiving report, Carlee quickly recognized that a Veteran was potentially retaining urine. Carlee quickly assessed the Veteran, obtained a bladder scan, and orders to straight cath the Veteran. The Veteran felt better after this and she continued to collaborate with the nursing team and provider and later had a foley catheter reinserted. Not only did she provide exceptional care to this Veteran, but she also completed an admission that day and all the additional dressing changes and all else that the remainder of the Veterans needed.
She never hesitates to go above and beyond what one would consider the nurse’s role. Every day she ensures that our Veterans are receiving the best of care and guidelines are being adhered to. She is a strong advocate for the Veterans whom she cares for and the staff that she works with. It is not every day that we come across a nurse like Carlee. She is nothing short of pure amazing. Her passion and caring are just a couple of the things that she embodies that our Veterans thrive from.
