Behind the counter of the nurses’ station rests a piece of paper with bold print: N.O.D.A. – (732)-321-7512. No One Dies Alone. This program exists to ensure that patients at the end of their lives receive compassion and companionship, even when family is not present. Last night, because of Carlos Cruz, no one died alone.

A patient, nearing the end of his life, made the difficult decision to forgo further aggressive medical treatment and transition to hospice care. Overwhelmed, his family left him alone—anxious, frightened, and in pain—to face his final moments. Carlos would not allow that. Though not the patient’s assigned nurse, Carlos entered the room, offered quiet comfort, and sat by his side. Carlos held the patient’s hand as he took his last breath, ensuring he passed peacefully and with dignity. To those who know Carlos, this comes as no surprise. Carlos’s nursing is unique—he heals with smiles, laughter, and warmth. What he did that night was not ordered by a doctor, nor directed by a manager, but inspired by a higher calling. Nursing is demanding—physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Yet, nurses maintain a title as the most trusted professionals, and Carlos is part of the reason why.

Carlos is a leader among his peers, setting the standard for compassionate nursing care. He does not seek recognition, but his actions deserve to be celebrated. That night, Carlos reminded us all why we proudly wear the letters RN on our chests. Carlos, on behalf of this patient and the JSUMC MICU nursing staff, thank you. Your extraordinary compassion—last night and every day—makes us proud to call you our friend.

Thank you, Carlos, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
