February 2022 Honoree
Carlos Joya, BSN, RN
I had many wonderful nurses in the ICU but Carlos stands out. Having recently almost died, I was a mess physically and emotionally. I was frightened. I was sobbing one minute and holding it together the next. His compassion and light lifted my spirits but it wasn't just his attitude. Most people can be cheery in simple situations. I was ill but relatively stable so not the most challenging patient. Of all the things going on, I just remember feeling skeptical about this whole process. But then there was Carlos smiling and fixing it all and not letting my feelings damper his spirit because he believed it was going to be okay. I believed it was going to be okay.
Thank you, Carlos, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
