Carly and I have been coworkers for a few years now. We work primarily with healthy patients, however, with the rise of COVID 19, we have had to coordinate care with some sick mothers who are off our floor in ICU. Recently we had a COVID positive mother on ICU with her baby in our isolation nursery and her COVID positive husband stuck in quarantine at home. We were able to get on a Zoom call with baby and daddy, but we were unable to coordinate a call with mom. Mom was also refusing some care which could be lifesaving. Carly made a “baby box” for mom, which included a set of footprints, baby’s hat, and a picture. This simple act made such a difference for mom! After receiving this box, mom started consenting to necessary care and reversed her DNR and DNI. Carly was able to help mom believe that she can be there for her baby. Not only did Carly facilitate this, but she also was able to coordinate donor breast milk for the baby. Breastfeeding has been an important goal for this family, and with Carly’s help, they are able to get breast milk to their baby. After hearing about these updates, I am amazed and inspired by how Carly went above and beyond “run of the mill” nursing care. I hope to remember these simple, but impressive acts Carly did for her mother-baby duo and improve my care.
