My grandmother was admitted to the hospital after suffering a heart attack. Three days later, following a stent placement, she suffered a stroke. My family and I were devastated. The doctors explained how serious and delicate her condition was, and we knew we were facing a difficult situation.

Over time, my grandmother began making progress and was eventually transferred to med-surg. During her stay there, one nurse stood out to our entire family… Carly.

From the very beginning, Carly treated my grandmother as if she were her own family member. She was incredibly attentive, compassionate, and always made sure not only that my grandmother had everything she needed, but that our family did as well. Even on days she was not assigned to my grandmother, Carly would stop by to check on her and help in any way she could. Whether my grandmother needed to be turned, cleaned, comforted, or simply reassured, Carly was always there.

One specific moment especially stands out to me. One day while I was visiting, my grandmother mentioned that her left leg was swollen. Carly came into the room and immediately listened to her concerns. Unlike others who may have brushed it off, Carly carefully checked her legs and feet and noticed pitting edema that had not been present the day before. She immediately contacted the doctor, who ordered scans of my grandmother’s legs. That scan revealed a blood clot. Carly’s attentiveness and quick action led to the discovery of that clot, and our family will always be grateful for diligence and care.

Beyond her medical attentiveness, Carly also showed extraordinary compassion. There were times when my grandmother was scared and alone and Carly would sit with her to comfort and reassure her. Knowing someone cared for her in that way meant more to our family than words can express.

What makes Carly even more exceptional is that her care for my grandmother did not end when she left the hospital. Even after my grandmother was transferred to rehab, Carly continued to call and check on her progress. She always encouraged her and celebrated every milestone she made. That level of compassion and dedication goes far beyond what is expected and speaks volumes about the kind of nurse and person Carly is.

There is much more we could say about the kindness, compassion, and exceptional care Carly showed to both my grandmother and our family throughout such a difficult time. We truly cannot think of anyone more deserving of this award than her.
