I wanted to give you a heads up on the fantastic job RN Carly Korbin did for us during an education training today: As you know, MCO was canceled for new hires and in an effort to keep the new group of RNs small and safe with social distancing, CNO was done at East Hospital for our six new hires. Part of our day included skills and one that I am not too familiar with: PCA pumps. I tried to pull it off but failed! I proceeded to do what I always do when I am working on T5 and have a PCA pump to start: I called T8 for help. Your staff is always quick to respond to this call, and Carly came over and demonstrated how to set up a PCA and how to troubleshoot. It was brilliant. But she took this one step further by answering questions the group had about the COVID-19 pandemic and how things are working on T8. She was professional, honest, and open and left me feeling that while no one can expect complete protection, OSU is doing all it can to treat patients and support our staff for the best possible outcome. The group of nurses expressed gratitude and one new nurse said it made her feel better about starting on your unit.
In a time of stress and high anxiety around the world, I cannot express how grateful I felt to know I have coworkers like Carly here at East Hospital.

Carly, you were recently mentioned in a patient safety report as being involved in Good Catch. Because of your intervention and/or speaking up and "stopping the line" you prevented an error. Thank you for doing the right thing and for your commitment to keeping our patients safe Nice Job!

Carly was one of my preceptors during my orientation. I worked beside her and she taught me more than just how to pass meds or do various nursing skills. Carly taught me how to be a compassionate nurse, I would not be the nurse I am today without all the knowledge and wisdom Carly shared, as well as the excellence she exemplified.

I cannot remember her name for sure, I think it was Carly. What a great nurse! Very nice and went above and beyond on everything she did!

Tower 8 recently had a complex displaced patient with significant mental health issues. It is still unknown, but somehow this patient, G boarded a bus in New Mexico and found his way to Columbus, Ohio. He has no family or caretakers that could be located to send him back to New Mexico, or anywhere else for that matter. As a result, G remained an inpatient on the unit until a state-appointed guardian could be established which resulted in a stay well over 100 days. This was a very trying patient - with his mental health challenges, he was not very compliant.
On any given day Carly could be found playing connect four, cards, walking the halls with G as a shadow, sitting in his room visiting, or any other activities to keep G preoccupied. Carly is the TIC resource on the floor. She has taken this role on completely and offers support to her peers. Carly fully utilized her skills and knowledge and social skills with G as well helped others cope with the challenges of having a patient of this nature on the unit for so long.

T8 was/is the designated COVID medical floor for East Hospital. Carly was quick to take the informal staff lead. Carly demonstrated professionalism and leadership skills with this designation. Several staff members verbalized concerns and Carly reassured them. She entered patient rooms without hesitation and spent the necessary time to reassure the patients as well. She reinforced PPE recommendations and requirements. During a very stressful, uncertain time, Carly shows confidence, leadership, professionalism, compassion, kindness, consideration, etc. We are truly lucky to have Carly as a part of our East team.
