Carly is in constant contact with him and his sister, making sure that he has his symptoms managed with all possible support and that he is consistently making appointments with several different specialists.
Carly is a case manager nurse for one of UCSD's outpatient oncologists. She goes above and beyond for all the patients, and I am proud to work alongside her as both a nurse and provider. One young oncology patient has had several needs - physical, psychosocial, and emotional. Carly is in constant contact with him and his sister, making sure that he has his symptoms managed with all possible support and that he is consistently making appointments with several different specialists. With the help of social work authorization staff schedulers etc - Carly coordinates his care and ensures all of his needs are met. Most recently this patient became ill with COVID but was not a candidate for outpatient Paxlovid. Carly helped to coordinate ambulance transport for this patient to get to his Hillcrest monoclonal antibody appointment for COVID therapy (and it was covered by insurance!). This is the type of behind-the-scenes compassionate care that sometimes gets overlooked. But this type of everyday oncology nursing saves lives, improves patient outcomes, decreases ED admissions, and keeps patients motivated through grueling chemotherapy. It took a full day to coordinate an ambulance, get it approved by the insurance, and coordinate with the patient and family. Knowing how many other patients Carly had to care for on this busy clinic day while still ensuring that this patient made it to his infusion appt is the type of attention to detail commitment and extra-mile care that makes Carly a DAISY Nurse. She does this type of work every single day; she is a gem
