That morning, Carly came into my room and not only took care of my physical health with scheduled meds and a BP check, but also took care of my mental health by actively listening to my concerns and proactively looking for solutions I felt comfortable with. Not to mention her incredibly caring and sweet demeanor.
I was a patient at the hospital recovering from a C-section and preeclampsia. This was my second delivery at Capital Health and my experience with the nursing staff has always been positive. However, my interactions with Carly were exceptional, and I felt the need to highlight her.

A little background: With my first pregnancy, my son was taken directly to the NICU after birth, and I was on magnesium sulfate, unable to visit him. By the time I was able to physically bond with him, he was a few days old.

With this pregnancy, my daughter was delivered at 37 weeks, avoiding magnesium sulfate and the NICU. My daughter came right to the room with my husband and I.

We were excited, but I was feeling a little insecure since I had no experience caring for a newborn during the first few days after birth.

By the time my daughter was 48 hours old, I was feeling pretty emotional trying to navigate healing, and breastfeeding. I expressed this to a few nurses, and while all tried to be helpful in different ways, I didn’t really feel 100% heard.

In the morning, I was assigned to Carly’s service. From the moment she walked into my room, she was kind, respectful, knowledgeable  and helped to put me at ease. I expressed my frustration with how breastfeeding was going and Carly assured me she was going to call someone from lactation and all together we would come up with a plan. She not only actively listened to me, but kept asking me how I FELT about her suggestions. I never felt “talked to” at all.

After that, she took a look at my room to see what could be done to make recovery more comfortable. It was a bunch of small changes that had a big impact. She noticed my pillow cases had slid to the floor and I was laying on just the blue pillows, so she brought me extra pillow cases. She noticed my daughter, at 5lbs, was only given newborn diapers and that they didn’t fit her at all, she quickly rectified that and brought in preemie diapers. She brought extra care supplies for me when she saw they were out or running low, and when I mentioned my nipples were bleeding and sore, Carly suggested not just cream but gel pads, too.

That morning, Carly came into my room and not only took care of my physical health with scheduled meds and a BP check, but also took care of my mental health by actively listening to my concerns and proactively looking for solutions I felt comfortable with. Not to mention her incredibly caring and sweet demeanor.

I’m nominating Carly because she is truly something special, and her passion for caring for other people is evident in every action she takes. Carly took care of me as a whole person, not just as a patient she was assigned to. I will be forever grateful for the experience she created, it allowed me to push forward with a much more confident and positive trajectory at home.
