Carmen was assigned to baby nurse for an anticipated routine C-Section. MS Tudic proceeded to assemble her team to receive the baby and was readily available for Team STEPPS. The baby was delivered at 1938 and a generous 9lbs 7oz and handed off to her and her team to assume care of the baby. She was made aware of the escalation in the mother's acuity and multi-tasked to provide additional bleeding meds to the primary circulator. She facilitated crowd control in the OR and continued transitional care to the baby in L&D PACU. The mother was placed under general anesthesia and the father joined the baby in the PACU holding area. She remained with the baby and father and provided him with compassionate reassurance and updates on his wife as made available by the OR Team. The father being an ER-resident was well-aware of his wife's critical condition, and her presence and communication bridged the gap of his focus to find comfort with his newborn baby. The team nursing and closed-loop communication between her, the charge nurse, and ANOIC composed an environment for the surgeons to maintain their focus and provide crowd control for essential personnel.
The outcome of the case was orchestrated as a remarkable collaborative effort between surgeons, anesthesia, and nursing staff resulting in a good outcome. The patient was stabilized, recovered in L&D PACU without further complications, and transferred to postpartum with expectant management of couplet care. She is recognized in her role as the baby nurse who provided compassionate family center care to the infant and my patient's spouse in a crucial time of unknown.
