Our primary value is the "needs of the patient come first." I come to work every day and see Carol demonstrating this no matter what it takes. Carol is the permanent charge nurse on our very busy Day Surgery unit. She is extremely dedicated and leads us so effectively every day. She is a servant leader who I love working with. I have worked at this facility for a very long time and know that Carol carries her heart with her every time she touches a patient. Her judgement is always right on and on many occasions she has prevented patient injury and harm because of her assessments.

Just the other day she was admitting a patient for a very complex neurosurgery. The patient started to tell her about symptoms of a urinary tract infection. This symptom wasn't present at her physical and had developed since then. Carol discussed with the patient her concerns related to risks related to infection and notified the provider. The surgery did have to be postponed and the symptom treated. She left Day Surgery disappointed but grateful for Carol's concern and attention to detail.

I admitted this patient when she returned for surgery and she was so appreciative for the wonderful care that Carol gave her and how she felt so safe because Carol kept her from further injury and harm. This is what nursing is all about. Carol defines what a DAISY nurse is.
