Carol exudes compassion, professionalism, and empathy in every aspect of her role. My mother was admitted to the Neuro ICU, back in September 2018, after a CT scan showed a buildup of fluid on her brain. A shunt was placed, and Carol was on duty that night and was assigned to her care.
My mom was in a coma-like state and could not communicate with us. At that time we were still unsure of a definitive diagnosis but it was concluded by the doctors that she most likely has leptomeningeal metastases from a small tumor they found on her lung. Carol could see that we were all exhausted from having stayed by my mom's bedside for over a week. She would instruct us to go home and get a much-needed night's rest and assured us that my mom would be well cared for and even took the time to introduce us to the oncoming nurse so we would feel comfortable leaving. Before leaving, Carol took the time to make a connection with us, chatting with us, and allowing us to reminisce and tell her about my mom, as a person and not just a patient with a terminal illness. We left feeling relieved and comfortable by the fact that we knew she was left in capable hands and that someone would call us if there were any changes in my mom's condition.
We were delighted to hear carol would be on duty the following day as well. The next day Carol took the time to meet my children, ages 13 and 15, and talked with them about my mom so they could understand her condition and what was happening. Although I am a nurse, I found it very difficult to assume that role and just wanted to be there as her daughter and their mother. This act of kindness was greatly appreciated. When it was time to make the heart-wrenching decision to transition to care and comfort measures only, carol was there. She may not have said much as my father and I sat there and cried, but her presence was felt, and she gave us both a hug as we come to terms with what was to come.
Carol explained the process and she was there the next day too and helped remove the vent and all the IV lines, etc. My mother looked like an angel that day, so beautiful and peaceful. Carol made sure she had adequate pain control and that she was assessed frequently for discomfort or any changes in her condition. The care and attention she gave my mom are second to none. It was exceptional. She went above and beyond in every way imaginable to not only my mom but also care for her family during an extremely painful and difficult time. I could not have asked for a better nurse. Unfortunately, my mother and my best friend passed away peacefully with her loving family at her bedside. Although it has been 10 months, I feel as though Carol's exceptional care and service should not go unrecognized.
