Carol loves building relationships with residents and their families.
Carol Wheeler has been an exceptional nurse at Estes Park Good Samaritan Village. Carol has been a nurse for 62 years. At the age of 83, Carol continues her craft of nursing with enthusiasm, love, and compassion. Carol loves building relationships with residents and their families. When the time comes for hard conversations, such as moving to a higher level of care or death and dying, she does this with kindness and compassion. Families have grown to trust her and come to her often to discuss their loved one's care and concerns. Residents trust that when she is in the building, her oversight of their care will be top-notch and that she will educate them and keep them abreast of any medication changes, concerns, and overall daily care.

Carol also is the Clinical Nurse and she works closely with the nurses, QMAPs, and universal workers to help guide them through the policies and procedures on medication administration, communicating with families, doctors, and daily operations of the resident's medical care. Carol educates 1:1 with staff who need more direction or to help build up confidence when they are not sure of themselves. When Carol is out of the building or on vacation, her absence is noted by all.

Taking the extra steps to be a leader and part of the leadership team, Carol has volunteered to come into the building and work the floor when we are short-staffed. The residents especially love these days as they get to see her in a new light. They have often commented that they have Florence Nightingale helping to give them their medication and take care of them for the day. Never once has Carol failed to rise to the occasion and work extra, give a helping hand, or sit with a resident who is having a hard day.

Carol has seen the nursing world change through her years of service. Carol worked as a surgical nurse for many years and has witnessed technology changes and improvements. She has never shied away from the changing world of medicine but has risen to so many challenges over her career in nursing. She has embraced PCC, even when many others were hesitant.

Carol likes to stay under the radar but deserves to be recognized for her amazing work.
