I believe Caroline exhibits the inherent skills of love and care you cannot teach.
My mother was sent to LVH after a fall in her assisted living facility. I arrived and stayed at the hospital and in the family room. The Thursday night shift nurse was Caroline. She immediately put me at ease and said she would be on the whole night and was there if I needed anything at all.
Caroline stopped to check on my mom regularly through the night and was always very gentle and kind. Her compassion and sense of care were exceptional. She gave me peace of mind that she really cared by always asking me how I was and if I needed anything. Her presence in the room just gave me an overwhelming sense that my Mom was in the best hands because she exhibited to me that she had excellent clinical skills and training. She always told me what she was doing and why, following up when she would be back and to let her know if I needed anything. She said it and you could tell she truly meant it.
About 1 a.m. I told Caroline that I was going to try to take a brief rest and head down to sleep for a couple of hours as I could no longer stay awake. Caroline assured me she would check in on my mother more frequently while I was taking a break. After a couple of hours of rest, I came back into my mother's room to find Caroline doing her work on the computer. She said she wanted to ensure my Mom was okay and to make sure she would let me know quickly if something changed. I could have not thanked her enough for these outstanding acts of compassion and kindness both to my mom and me. She deserves a thousand hugs just for that!
I think Caroline could sense my sadness and struggle in this situation. Having Caroline as my guardian angel that night was very moving and will never be forgotten! Because of her actions and compassion, I will never forget her. I have been in the hospital myself on a couple of occasions. You don't often find a good combination of true compassion and nursing skills in one individual. I believe Caroline exhibits the inherent skills of love and care you cannot teach. Your nursing management staff should be honored to have her there at LVH as a nurse and a role model for others. Thanks for having this Award, it exemplifies the good in the world and a way to give back some kindness!
