Carolyn can walk into a patient's room and intuitively know what is wrong with them and what they need. I overhear nurses all the time asking if Carolyn could come into their room and give her expert opinion on any situation.
Carolyn Darabaris is an unsung hero in our Trauma Neuro ICU. Having worked with her the past 2-night shifts, here is what I
have observed that makes her deserving of the prestigious DAISY Award:
1) Carolyn was assigned a patient who was newly placed on comfort. I observed her placing a lounge chair next to the patient's bed for the wife, ensuring that the chair was on the patient's left side (as they sleep in bed at home). She placed a do not disturb on the door so the patient and wife could have one of their last night's together as husband and wife uninterrupted. Each child shook Carolyn's hand as they were leaving to thank her for the kind and compassionate care that she provided to their father.
2) As I walked past the nurses' station, I overheard Carolyn providing an impromptu CRRT master class for the nurses newly certified to run CRRT. I pulled up a chair
and listened while she explained troubleshooting and alarms using easy-to-understand analogies.
3) Carolyn can walk into a patient's room and intuitively know what is wrong with them and what they need. I overhear nurses all the time asking if Carolyn could come into their room and give her expert opinion on any situation.
4) An IV expert, I have seen her buzz into rooms inserting IVs in the most difficult
5) Young nurses ask Carolyn if they could watch and help her settle new sick traumas so that they can learn and emulate her. She is flawless and efficient, calm under the most pressure-filled situations, and able to teach and mentor at the same time.
6) As our skin guru who sits on the hospital-wide skin council, Carolyn is our go to for all things skin.
Our patients and nurses are so fortunate to have Carolyn as our TNICU team. As we go through our daily work, we find it easy to take people and things for granted. I can attest that walking into the unit and seeing that Carolyn is here and breathing a sigh of relief is really a testament to how wonderful she is!
