She turned on music for the patient and turned the lights down to create a calming environment.
At the beginning of the shift, a physician called from the fifth floor asking if any nurse could start an IV in a pinch because a patient upstairs lost sight while getting a blood transfusion. Without hesitation, Carolyn offered to give it a shot. Instead of ignoring the call for help and starting her assignment she selflessly went to the aid of another nurse and a patient that was not hers. I can’t count on my fingers how many times Carolyn has offered to help other nurses in a pinch when it comes to IV starts. Later in the shift, Carolyn’s COVID-positive patient started hallucinating and having a hard time. She was worried about the babies that she thought were in her room and no matter how much reassurance she was given by the ancillary staff she could not seem to shake the idea that she needed to help these babies. Carolyn took the time to gown up in proper PPE and sit with this patient while completing charting. Something many wouldn’t even think to do because wearing PPE can quickly become hot and uncomfortable. She turned on music for the patient and turned the lights down to create a calming environment. By taking extra time with this woman, she was able to not only get her to relax but also take her evening pills which was something other nurses struggled with. Carolyn’s actions exemplified nothing short of Trinity’s Core Values. Carolyn is a compassionate, patient, and selfless nurse. She is always willing to take extra time with her patients and go the extra mile even when no one is looking. I couldn’t think of a better example of what it means to be a St. Joseph Nurse.
