I am writing this letter to nominate Carolyn for the DAISY Award. My family will be forever grateful for Carolyn's awareness and recognition of my daughter's immediate need for attention. Our daughter, K, was born 12/19/10 and was a very healthy baby girl with excellent vital signs for several hours after birth. When Carolyn came to do routine vitals later in the day, she got a low pulse oximetry reading. This could have easily been overlooked and rechecked at a later time, as there was no indication or reason as to why she would have such a low oxygen level, but Carolyn's recognition and action of this is what helped save our daughter's life. She immediately took her to the nursery to get a better reading, and after confirming it was low, proper action followed and she was admitted to the NICU. K was found to have a congenital heart defect called Transposition of the Great Arteries. This was a complete shock to us, but we are so very grateful to OSF and CHOI for taking such great care of our daughter. We truly believe we were in the best place possible we could have been and that we had a nurse who recognized an issue and took the proper course of action. We were told with this type of heart defect, it is often missed and the children go home, to only come back days later in a very unstable condition. We cannot tell you how grateful we will be to OSF and CHOI for having great nurses, such as Carolyn, who care about what they do and recognize when there is an issue, rather than letting it go. This could have easily been done in our case because our daughter did not look sick and had great vital signs up to that point. I am happy to report that K is doing extremely well given everything she has had to endure in her first few weeks of life. She had open heart surgery 12/30/10 and we were able to finally go home a week after that! I cannot imagine all the "what if's" had this not been detected when it did. It is scary to know this could have easily been missed and our situation would have been very different. Carolyn deserves recognition for doing such a thorough assessment of K and picking up on this. It is nurses like Carolyn who help make OSF and CHOI one of the best places to be when you are going through something like this with your child. We will be forever grateful for her being there when she was!
